Protect Your Baby from RSV with Vaccination During Pregnancy

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that can cause serious illness in newborn babies and young infants. RSV is one of the leading causes of hospitalisation in babies during their first year of life.

The good news is that eligible pregnant women can now access a free RSV vaccine through the National Immunisation Program (NIP).

Why is RSV vaccination during pregnancy important?

When you receive the RSV vaccine during pregnancy, protective antibodies are passed to your baby before birth. This helps provide protection during the first months of life, when babies are most vulnerable to severe RSV infection.

Vaccination can help:

  • Reduce the risk of severe RSV illness in newborns.
  • Lower the likelihood of hospitalisation.
  • Help protect babies during their earliest months before their immune systems are fully developed.

Who is eligible?

The RSV vaccine is available free under the National Immunisation Program for eligible pregnant women who have, or are eligible for, a Medicare card.

Vaccination is recommended from 28 weeks of pregnancy, ideally before 36 weeks gestation.

Book an appointment

If you are pregnant and would like to discuss RSV vaccination, speak with your GP. The doctor can help determine the best timing for your vaccination and answer any questions you may have.
